2012 February list #1

Keith Mansfield – Loot (Grail time! VG+/VG CBS 70023 OG UK issue. Ringwear on sleeve. The breaks and beats on offer here are truly unbelievable along with the wicked hammond-led EZ-funk.) £60

Bobby Womack & J.J. Johnson – Across 110th Street (NM unofficial reissue) £18

Melvin Van Peebles – Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song (An Opera) (NM reissue) £15

Carmine Coppola & Francis Coppola – Apocalypse Now (vinyl VG – sleeve VG+ original inner sleeves. 2xLP Elektra – ELK 62 025. An unusual approach for a OST; this basically takes chunks of the film – dialogue, effects, music, everything and puts it on 4 sides of vinyl.) £10

Barry White – Together Brothers (G+ crackly Pye Records – NSPL 28203 LP. 21 tracks, not many vocals, lots of great ideas) £8

Francis Lai – Bilitis (VG United Artists Records – UAS 30161. Just check the break in “Rainbow” at 3′ 27″) £2

Neal Hefti – Duel At Diablo (Original Motion Picture Score) (G+ 1966 press ULP1141) £2

Jack Parnell And His Orchestra – Great Film Scores Of The 70’s (NM Lp with an “Enter the Dragon” that’s better than Lalo’s version – none of the stupid KungFu FX. Check the clip) £3

Chilling, Thrilling Sounds Of The Haunted House (Disneyland – 1257 LP. 20 tracks of creepy sound effects from the Disney library) £2

Hollywood Strings Orchestra Direction Mario Cavallero – Les Plus Célèbres Airs De Films (NM 2xLP with “Shaft” and “Vera cruz”) £2

Frank Hooker & Positive People – I Wanna Know Your Name / This Feelin’ (VG 12″ Panorama Records – YD-11985) £2

Ellison – Ellison (VG bluesy-prog LP Supreme – SR 2900. Canadian release. Cover is VG and if I hadn’t listened to it I’d have said the vinyl grades visually close to NM. Crackles in very quiet parts an between tracks. This has a black and white label rather than the black and yellow one the original has. Guess it’s some sort of reissue, but it’s not the one that’s on a different label.)

Prelude – How Long Is Forever (VG+ LP Dawn Records – DNLS 3052 with “Paris dawn”) £12

Leo Sayer – s/t (VG+ 2xLP on Ellem Records. Hold on – where are you going? As if to prove my argument that everyone has at least one good record in them along comes “Easy to love”. A shame this isn’t on YouTube as it’s a great little boogie/yaughtrock crossover) £3

OC Smith – Help Me Make It Through The Night (VG+ CBS – C 30664 with a VG sleeve. “Tall oak tree”) £3

J.V.C. F.O.R.C.E. – Doin’ Damage (VG+ B-Boy Records – BB 2010 LP reissue. Sleeve is NM – still in shrink. If ‘Strong island’ isn’t the best rap record ever then it must be in the top 3) £3

Freddie Hubbard – Windjammer (VG+ Columbia US LP with a VG sleeve) £2

Raulzinho – Impacto 8 – International Hot (NM 2002 reissue – WMLP-0039 LP. Funky latin business including a stomping track that the Wu sampled) £8
